The British Crime Survey (BCS) for 2009/10 tells us that about 480,000 bicycles were stolen in England and Wales.  That’s 1,315 a day; an astonishing number and one which reflects extremely poor bicycle security and what’s more criminologists have suggested that BCS figures are underestimated.  It doesn’t really matter how much you spend on your bike as a cheap one will be missed just as much as an expensive one if this is your usual mode of transport.  So please mark it or tag it and register it with one of the police recognised schemes and databases.  Also make a note of the frame number, which can usually be found underneath the bottom bracket or on the rear forks.  Most of the databases allow you to record other details, such as the make, model, and colour of the bike and other distinguishing features; all of which is worthwhile.

Further information about preventing your bike from being stolen can be found in  Bicycles and vehicles, Bicycles .
