Press Release from Cumbria Police

Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) in Whitehaven are working to help protect bicycles in West Cumbria by holding a security marking event.

PCSOs will be at the Whitehaven Harbour Youth Project (below multi-storey car park, Swingpump Lane, Whitehaven) on Saturday 4th July between 1-3pm to encourage people to get their bikes marked and registered, to help deter thieves from stealing them, and to assist in returning a recovered bike to the rightful owner.

At this event people will have the opportunity to bring their bikes along and have them securely marked, with a choice of two methods:

Option 1. BikeRegister permanent ID etchings, at a small cost of £5 per bike.

Option 2. Postcode marked tamper-proof sticker, free.

Both of these options also include free registration to BikeRegister’s national database to which every UK Police force has access.

TCPW Comment:  This is an excellent (and very cheap) opportunity for the residents of West Cumbria and I urge you to go along with your bikes. All bicycles should be marked and registered, preferably using systems certificated to LPS 1225 (Overt Marking System) and LPS 1224 (Secure Asset Register)

The worst thing about losing your bike is when the police recover it, but cannot identify it as belonging to you! This can often mean letting the thief go free!

Mark it and get your own back!
