The Crime Prevention Website

Brilliant! Greater Manchester Police launched GMP Radio on 26th September, a new service that delivers a monthly podcasts to listeners.

Hosted by PC Mike McGuinness and recorded in his own time, each episode will explore a different theme or trend around crime prevention and safeguarding in Greater Manchester, offering support, advice and tips for listeners.

The first GMP Radio podcast is available for download now and will soon be available on iTunes.

In this mental health special report, PC McGuinness visits the Alzheimer’s Show and hears from experts in the nursing and charity sector, as well as speaking with emergency services officers from both Greater Manchester Police and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue. We also hear a first-hand account of the impact dementia has on families from someone with first-hand experience, respected news and radio presenter John Suchet.

Deputy Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said:

“GMP Radio is a new, comprehensive exploration of issues important to Greater Manchester and we are delighted to launch this podcast service with a look at dementia and its impact on communities.

“Dementia affects around 670,000 people in the UK alone, with many people yet to be diagnosed. We work closely with support services across the region to make sure that these people receive the best possible support.

“Anything we can do to raise awareness or provide comfort is great, and this podcast has a wealth of information for listeners.”

PC McGuinness, who was a professional radio DJ before joining the force in 2008 said:

“I am thrilled to launch GMP Radio. We have worked hard to deliver content that is both interesting and useful to the local community and I hope the listeners enjoy the final product as much as I have enjoyed creating it.”

I was really impressed, not just with the content of the podcast, but by the commitment of Mike McGuinness.  I’ll certainly be tuning in next month for the next one!
