It’s good to see several police services running these ‘back to school safety campaigns’ aimed at instructing our children how to keep themselves and their possessions safe and secure.

Croydon’s began yesterday and involves extra patrols both in uniform and in plain clothes, particularly focussing on transport hubs and the routes used by children to get to school.

This is an excellent initiative, which recognises the fact that children just starting out at high school are likely to have new phones.

Local police will also be chatting with children and their parents along these routes, handing out advisory leaflets, and they’ll be visiting schools to talk with year 7 pupils about protecting their mobiles and other gadgets.

Obviously, parents are key to the success of these types of initiatives and a conversation about personal security around the meal table would help drive the messages home.
