The Crime Prevention Website

I liked this!

You Tube Crime Prevention Volunteers

Royal Canadian Mounted Place in Merritt, British Columbia employs volunteers to help them with their various crime prevention programmes.  This video shows two such volunteers checking the security of vehicles in their neighbourhood.  If they find something amiss they issue a crime prevention notice, which is placed under the wiper blade.  The notice simply states that ‘A police officer or community volunteer examined your vehicle and found the following’ and then there’s a tick box for the common problems they have in Merritt, such as keys left in vehicle; garage door opener left in vehicle; window open and so on.

We do a similar thing in parts of the UK, which may be done by volunteers, but mostly I’ve seen PCSOs issuing the notices, mainly in supermarket and public car parks.  I reported last year that Thames Valley Police issue notices that resemble parking tickets – a design that’s bound to get someone’s attention!

I do hope these volunteers in Merritt remain in the vicinity of the vehicles they’ve identified as being insecure though as these notices could be further noticed by the car thieves themselves!  On balance though I think these notices are a great idea and I wonder how much of it we do in the UK.
