Today the Home Affairs Select Committee published their first report on Police and Crime Commissioners.

Commenting on the report, Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Sue Mountstevens said:

“I welcome scrutiny. I owe it to the public who elected me to make sure that we operate as transparently and cost effectively as possible.  Mine is one of only ten PCC offices that have met the statutory obligations and published the full financial data required.

“Over the past six months there have been many debates about the size of PCC teams and spending.  The role of the PCC is much bigger than the previous Police Authority.  I made a personal commitment from the beginning to work much more closely with the communities of Avon and Somerset, keeping them safe and providing the most cost effective and efficient policing service.  In my first 6 months as Police and Crime Commissioner I’ve received more than 5000 emails, responses and letters from the public compared to around 250 over the last year of the Police Authority.

“Unfortunately some of the figures for Avon and Somerset published in the Home Office give a false picture because they are not accurate. Far from the 15% increase quoted for my office, the real figure is just 3.6% or £50,000.

“The correct budget figure for the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) is less than half a percent of the overall police budget, below the published national average of 0.6%.”
