The Crime Prevention Website

The BBC recently conducted a little analysis of the most recent crime statistics issued by the Office for National Statistics and the Home Office. The article, which covers England only, is worth a read and then perhaps some reflection, before trying to reach any conclusions, which is actually almost impossible since we are only looking at one measure.

In England the average number of arrests made for every 100 burglaries is 13.9 – it was 15.7 per 100 the year before. Cleveland Police had the highest ratio with 32.4 arrests per 100 burglaries and West Midlands Police had the lowest ratio with 6.9 arrests per 100 burglaries.  The Metropolitan Police came in at 10.2 arrests for every 100 burglaries.

The article includes an interactive map to show you each English force’s arrest performance in respect to burglary. From the data on this map I’ve worked out the ratios for each police force.

The number in the list below is the number of arrests per 100 burglaries. An arrest for burglary does not necessarily mean the burglary was cleared up and so taken in isolation it is difficult to use this data as any measure of police performance. For example, one arrest of a prolific burglar could result in many, many burglaries being solved.  The City of London Police is not included in this table, but is believed to be around 25/100.
