For those of you who are interested in the level of gun violence in the US here’s a very interesting report from independent political magazine ‘Mother Jones’.

A three year investigation into gun violence informs us that it’s costing each American citizen $700 a year; a staggering $229 billion!  The study identifies two main categories of costs.  Direct costs, which includes police investigation, court appearances and prison and indirect costs, which include quality of life issues, such as ongoing health treatment, loss of main salary earner and so on.

This figure is compared with other costs such as $224 billion for its obesity crisis and $289 billion for smoking, suggesting that the problem has become a public health crisis.
