The Crime Prevention Website

Every time I take a look at the Nuneaton and Bedworth Neighbourhood Watch’s excellent website I am always shocked at the sheer number of frauds being committed by cold callers on the phone and at the door.

This time round we’ve had Bogus Citizen Advice calls to pensioners supposedly offering pension advice, fraudsters pretending to be an elderly person’s grandson or granddaughter stuck abroad and in urgent need of money and hoax calls, allegedly from Greater Manchester Police, asking you to urgently call a 0809, 0284 or 0876 area code number whereby you’ll be charged £1,500 per minute; and that’s just three shown on their home page today – and there’s a great deal more!

The only sure way not to become a victim is not to engage in conversation with any cold caller, either at the door or on the phone – ever! If the police need to speak with you urgently they will visit you in person, usually in uniform and their police car will be parked outside.  Citizen’s Advice don’t cold call. The Council doesn’t cold call; in fact I can’t think of any publically funded body that cold calls. The elderly are usually the targets for these sorts of crimes, so do a good turn and throw this subject into a conversation with an elderly neighbour this week.

Whoever gets elected should put a stop to this sort of thing, including those pesky calls about PPI and accident claims.  I had three calls on my mobile about an accident I didn’t have last week! Drives you nuts, doesn’t it!
