The Crime Prevention Website

Well done indeed to local Metropolitan police officer, Belinda Goodwin, and her colleagues who’ve put together a pretty good Home Security film aimed at the residents of the London Borough of Havering.

The film shows ‘Ricky Jones’, a full-time burglar of that parish, walking around the local streets pointing out various common security weaknesses in a variety of different homes.  He shows us how easy it is for a burglar to spot an unoccupied home and also shows you what the typical burglar might do once inside your house – there’s more, but I won’t spoil it for you! (When you see the state of Ricky’s jacket though you might think he should be stealing a new coat!)

The video ends with Belinda giving the audience some sensible crime prevention advice and what’s more she lets people know that she and her colleagues will be more than happy to visit your home to offer advice in person.

I have one tiny criticism though.  I perfectly understand that the film is aimed at Havering residents, but I think it is worthy of greater circulation across London.  It strikes me that with budgets as tight as they are the video could have been adapted for use across London with a different intro for each borough and local borough police details tagged onto the end.  Maybe this is the idea, since we’re told that this is a pilot ‘scheme’ in the description on You Tube.

Nevertheless, it’s really good to see the Met getting the Home Security message out in this way

Keep ‘em peeled!
