The Crime Prevention Website

Many of you will know that several of our police services have be operating firearms amnesties during the course of this year (a lot of them about now), the first since 2008.  A search on the internet reveals that illegally and unwanted firearms and ammunition have been handed in at a significant level.

Here’s just a few numbers of handed in firearms so far this year. Please note that these are not complete figures. Some amnesties have now finished and others are still ongoing

  • Greater Manchester Police 225
  • North Wales Police 35
  • Metropolitan Police 70
  • Cumbria Police 70
  • West Mercia and Warwickshire Police 436
  • Lincolnshire Police 132
  • South Yorkshire Police 19

Some of the police service amnesty periods, which have been one or two weeks have finished, others still have a few days to run and some have just started today. Please check with your local police to see if they are operating a firearm amnesty and for what period.

I said in a previous news item about this amnesty that we were bound to see the odd wartime relic make an appearance and sure enough an 80-year-old man caused a security alert at a south-west London police station last week when he handed in a live mortar bomb!

A handed in gun is one gun that cannot be used during a crime.
