The Crime Prevention Website

Can't you tell that the day is shortening and this weekend we'll also see the clocks go back to make it even darker – earlier (I wish they wouldn’t do that!)

I can tell, because the number of people who complete our Home Security Survey goes up at this time of year.  Why is this?  It’s probably a fear of the dark and a direct result of our evolutionary history when at night we would have hunkered down to hide from predatory animals and lit fires to keep them away. It’s simply in our Psyche, a useful crime prevention hangover from our past.

Of course, for most of us, it’s not the wild fauna we’re worried about these days, it’s more a worry about our own kind; the sort that’ll try the door handles at night and steal stuff out of the garden and from our cars.  Fortunately we don’t have to go in search of tinder to light a fire; we simply have to switch a light on – aren’t we lucky!

So, why not take the clock change as a signal to practice a little caveman or cavewoman adaptability and make sure our home security is at the right level.
