The Crime Prevention Website

I am really pleased to tell you about our very first link with a Street Watch organisation, the Bedfordshire Street Watch

Some of you may not know what Street Watch is, so I thought a little explanation might be of interest:

The Bedfordshire Street Watch, which is one of several around the country (an internet search reveals lots of references), is a police and Home Office supported organisation of local residents who promote good citizenship and support their neighbourhood by patrolling their own streets. They provide a visible reassurance and engage appropriately in local issues that matter to the community.

They have three main purposes:

  • They prevent crime by increasing visibility and maintaining a caring and cohesive community
  • They assist police through effective communication and prompt reporting of activity
  • They increase feelings of safety by promoting a sense of security and community spirit

Volunteers are asked to commit just two hours each month to patrol at times of their choosing.

In Bedfordshire they operate in: Marston Moretaine, Ampthill, Barton-Le-Clay, Biggleswade, Caddington, Clifton, Dunstable, Harlington, Houghton Regis, Maulden and Shefford.

Their website states that Street Watch is a way of reclaiming back our streets and open spaces from those who may wish to engage in activities that undermine our communities; a very worthwhile objective that we at TCPW most certainly support.

By making the link we are able to promote their activity and in turn the link will provide the watch members with lots of crime prevention advice which they can pass onto the residents they meet whilst on patrol.

If you would like to know more about the Bedfordshire Street Watch and maybe volunteer a little of your time please visit their website at this link: http://www.street-watch.org/index.html
